Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
